Meet our recipient for the 10th Annual Throwdown Surf Classic. His name is Louie Rodriguez. Louie is a 33 year old single father of a 9 year old boy named Dylan. For the past 9 years, he has dedicated himself to public service by volunteering and working as a firefighter at the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department and the Colington Volunteer Fire Department. Louie was recently diagnosed with Thyroid Papillary Cancer. The cancer had grown without any symptoms until the tumor affected his left vocal chord paralyzing it. By then the cancer had already metastasized to both lungs and caused fluid build up on the outside of his lungs. Louie was referred to Duke, where his doctors are confident they can safely remove the tumor and their treatment can help minimize the masses in his lungs. The doctors consider this cancer incurable since it has spread from one organ to the next. Louie will have to receive medical treatment for the rest of his life. With PET Scans, other extensive medical testing and expenses for traveling, this has put a tremendous financial burden on Louie. Being a single dad also means he is the only source of income for his household. It is an honor to help Louie as he has given back to our community for the past 9 years. We hope you will come out on September 15th and show your support.
