Duck, NC – The Duck Jazz Festival presented by PNC celebrates its 10thyear of bringing high quality jazz performers from around the nation to the Town of Duck for this special event held annually on Columbus Day weekend.

This year’s festival adds a new event in the Duck Town Park, a Concert on the Green on Saturday, October 8, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. featuring jazz guitarist Frank Vignola with Vinny Raniolo.  One of the most extraordinary guitarists performing today, his stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, and guitar legend Les Paul.  Performing together for many years Vignola & Raniolo have become one of the most popular duos on the international music scene.

Festival artists appearing on Sunday include a variety of educators and musicians bringing different sounds of jazz to Duck.  Robert Jospé was inspired by his Belgian parents’ love of music and began playing the drums at fourteen. After years of education and experience performing in the New York City jazz and rock scene, Jospé became a member of the University of Virginia’s music department faculty in 1989.  Jospé will bring his Express – Trio to the Duck Jazz Festival main stage, and will perform an interactive program titled Journey of the Clave from Africa to the Americas on the Amphitheater stage.

The Rad Trads is an NYC based group that has quickly gained the reputation of one of the city’s most entertaining live acts.  Featuring three powerful horns, a driving rhythm section and three captivating lead vocalists, this group brings their “love of the game to a diverse style of soulful American music, with influences ranging from early jazz to New Orleans brass band, R&B, the Chicago and delta blues, and rock & roll.”  The Rad Trads will also stay in town on Monday to lead a jazz workshop for area Dare County high school and middle school jazz and chorus students.

Trumpeter and composer Marquis Hill won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition in 2014.  Hill will be performing with the Marquis Hill Blacktet which is self-described as presenting Hill’s own “late-modern spin on Jazz standards, capturing the essence of this rich oral tradition.” Catch Marquis Hill the night before the festival giving a quick sample of his chops at the Blue Point interactive jam session.

The festival lineup is rounded out with performances on the Amphitheater Stage by the Second Marine Aircraft Wing Jazz Ensemble located at Cherry Point, North Carolina performing a tribute to jazz as an American art form by playing a variety of swinging staples from the modern jazz ensemble literature.  The First Flight High School Honors Jazz Band will also return for a closing performance on the Amphitheater stage.

Davina Sowers, vocalist, pianist and composer will be joined by The Vagabonds to finish the day on the main stage bringing a high-energy performance filled with New Orleans charm and Memphis soul swagger.  This quintet is said to “bring edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears.”

Events begin on the Green on Friday, October 7th at 6:45 p.m. with Children @ Play showing The Muppet Movie which features a soundtrack written by Paul Williams and jazz pianist Kenny Ascher.  A workshop for Dare County student jazz musicians will take place with festival musicians The Rad Tradson Monday morning.
